Shooting of journalist draws condemnation
The shooting of a journalist in Podgorica drew condemnation in Montenegro from the government and media circles, Beta news agency reported.
Prime Minister Dusko Markovic sharply condemned the attack on Vijesti daily journalist Olivera Lakic and called for a quick and efficient investigation while some civil society organizations blamed the incident on the authorities saying that they failed to solve a number of attacks on journalists.
"The government is committed >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to freedom of the media and the unobstructed work of journalists. I demand a quick and efficient investigation which will uncover the motives of the attack, the perpetrators and their possible accomplices and who gave the order,” Markovic wrote on the government Twitter account.
Internal affairs Minister Mevludin Nuhodzic said the police will do everything to find the attacker while the Ministry of Culture said this was an attack on the media in Montenegro.
The embasssies of the US and Great Britain and the European Union Delegation expressed concern and called for journalists to be protected.
The attack was condemned by opposition parties and some NGOs which blamed the attack on President Milo Djukanovic and PM Markovic.
A protest has been scheduled in front of the Montenegrin government headquarters.
Lakic was shot in the leg at close range in front of her home on Tuesday evening. She has been assaulted in the past after writing investigative reports on crime in Montenegro.
