Changes to Serbian law could shut down CarGo

The Serbian Parliament has adopted changes to the law on passenger transport which the CarGo company says will shut it down.

Changes have been introduced to the part of the law governing taxis which the Transport Ministry said are in line with the European Union’s acqui communitaire and do not prevent the use of apps to improve taxi services.

A ministry statement said the law does not allow passenger transport by companies which do not have the required permits which >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << is important for both service users and traffic safety.

The CarGo company said earlier that it will no longer be able to operate once the law takes effect, adding that the changes to the law ban the use of mobile phone apps.

Under the amendments, the cost of taxi services is determined by taxi meter which CarGo vehicles do not have. Taxis also have to carry taxi signs on their roofs which CarGo vehicles also do not have.

Taxi permits will now be issued by municipal and city governments based on their decisions on the number of taxi vehicles allowed in their local communities.
