Vucic apologises for false statement on window washers in US
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic apologised for recently falsely claiming that every ten seconds a window washer dies in the US, saying that he was tired, had no ill intentions, but did not think the statement through first.
Speaking to reporters at a joint press conference he gave with India’s Vice-President on Saturday, Vucic said he made the statement after an advisor gave him the information, which came from a satirical web portal.
“I want to apologise to all >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << citizens, yesterday at a press conference I spoke about accidents that happen across the world within the construction sector and I said that every ten seconds a window washer in America dies,” Vucic said.
“The information comes from some satirical website,” he said, adding that he does not blame his advisors and that he should have better thought about it before saying it.
When he made the statement, Vucic was commenting on the death of two workers who died working on the Belgrade Waterfront construction site.
He expressed his condolences to the families, but said that “in Serbia, there are proportionally a lot less accidents in dangerous jobs, such as construction.”
“As for the allegations aimed against the state, I want to tell the citizens - even though I did not want to speak about it - that I read some data. Did you know that, in America, every ten seconds one window washer dies doing his job?,” he said on Friday.
In fact, similar information was published by the satirical website, The Onion.
