Kosovo ex-prosecutor: There was no one to turn to
Former Kosovo prosecutor, who resigned earlier this month, said on Monday there was no one who he could report to about the threats to his life for investigating the 1989-1999 war veterans’ list he said was false, the Beta news agency said.
Elez Blakaj wrote on his Facebook profile that his resignation was a protest and a message following the threats he said he was exposed to for prosecuting former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an ethnic Albanian >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << guerrilla force that fought against Belgrade military and police during the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo, who were later suspected of terrorist links.
Blakaj said the messages he had received read “take care where you go to,” take care because you cast doubt on war's values,” “why you worry about the state money, it’s not taken from you,” and alike.
He wrote he did not have anyone whom he would report the threats.
“During the investigation (Aleksandar) Lumezi (the state prosecutor) summoned me urgently and sought my responsibility for calling Kadri Veseli (the Parliament speaker) to court as a witness, saying ‘they have immunity, they shouldn’t be called’,” Blakaj said on his Facebook profile.
But, he added, Kosovo’s Constitution stipulated that “never, no one, under any circumstances will be granted immunity for criminal activities.”
Blakaj said that Lumezi told him he would report him to a disciplinary commission unless he reconsidered the ‘Pronto’ case which had been forwarded to the court and in which high ranking officials from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK) were indicted.
The party is the third-largest and the main centre-right political organisation in Kosovo formed by the former members of the KLA and headed by Veseli.
Blakaj wrote he wanted to present the problems to the prosecutors’ office, but that it was impossible “because that system is in the hands of a few prosecutors who are not familiar with either the procedures or the law.”
