CoE reviewing Serbia’s compliance with court ruling

The Council of Europe (CoE) is reviewing Serbia’s compliance with rulings by the European Court of Human Rights on missing babies cases, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.

The CoE Committee of Ministers is looking into whether Serbia has complied with the ruling at its June 5-7 session, following several calls for the Belgrade authorities to urgently adopt a law on missing babies to discover what happened to babies who are alleged to have gone missing from Serbian maternity >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << wards.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled in March 2013 that Serbia has to pay 10,000 Euro in damages to its citizen Zorica Jovanovic and provide information on what happened to her newborn baby which is alleged to have disappeared from the maternity ward in Cuprija more than 30 years ago. Several hundred more cases are waiting for rulings by the court which had set a deadline of October 9, 2014 for the implementation of its ruling.

Several thousand people in Serbia have claimed that their newborn children were kidnapped after being reported dead in maternity wards and are demanding a government investigation into cases dating back as far as the 1950s. Some of the families have sued the state of Serbia before the European Court of Human Rights.
