Hungarian FM says Gruevski asylum not a political issue

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday that the asylum request filed by former Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski was a legal, not a political issue.

“That is a legal issue, not a political one. The relevant institutions will continue the procedure in line with international law and we will see the result,” the foreign minister said after a meeting with his Kosovo counterpart Behgjet Pacolli >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << in Pristina.

Gruevski fled Macedonia earlier this week before he was due to report to jail to serve a two year sentence for misuse of public funds during his term as prime minister when he was involved in the purchase of a luxury Mercedes car. Gruevski is reported to have crossed from Macedonia into Albania before going to Montenegro and allegedly crossing Serbia to get to Hungary where he applied for asylum.
