Serbia lacks tolerance and empathy, deputy PM warns

Serbian society lacks tolerance and empathy, deputy Prime Minister and head of the government gender equality body Zorana Mihajlovic said on Friday.

“Serbia and the world are marking International Day for Tolerance and it’s important to recall the beauty of diversity and the need for us all to contribute to mutual respect and harmony, regardless of nationality, religion, political affiliation or the fact that we are men or women,” a press release quoted Mihajlovic as saying.

She added that the daily battle against stereotypes and prejudices is important as is teaching children to respect diversity.

“Tolerance is learned in the family and should be taught in kindergartens and schools. By teaching our young to respect each other and take care of each other, we create the society that we want – a society of non-violence in which everyone has an equal opportunity to grow and develop,” the government Coordination Body for Gender Equality chief said.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 1995 the UN Year for Tolerance at the initiative of UNESCO and outlined in the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance and in 1996 called UN member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November to raise public awareness of the dangers of intolerance.
