Serbian justice minister says judges to get better status

Serbian Justice Minister Nela Kuburovic said on Monday that the amendments to the constitution drafted by her ministry would improve the position of judges.

She told an annual meeting of judges in the town of Vrnjacka Banja that parliament will no longer have sole jurisdiction over the election of judge, specifying that the High Judiciary Council will appoint judges and court presidents while parliament can only appoint a judge temporarily.

The minister said that once the amendments are adopted judges will no longer be transferred from court to court against their will.

The amendments to the constitution were re-drafted following recommendations by the Venice Commission.
