Web Summit 2017, November 7-10, Lisbon: (A surprise) Inside Europe’s coolest tech conference
Started only 5 years ago as a startup conference, today the Web Summit became Europe's largest tech event with its 50’000 participants. Held in Lisbon, it tackles everything from hot new startups to the race to make driverless cars. Welcome to the new meeting ground for technology and business (… and not only. )
Having started 5 years ago as a symposium for startups, today Web Summit holds the title of Europe’s fastest growing technology conference, with 50,000 attendants visiting >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu Telegraf.rs << its state of the art venue in Lisbon this November.
Started its life in a sitting room in Ranelagh, Ireland with just 400 attendees, Web Summit today has grown into one of the most important gathering of startups in the world, held this year at the state-of-the-art venue MEO Arena and FIL Feira Internacional de Lisboa built for Expo ’98.
Tech professionals, investors, business executives and political leaders from around the globe flew to Portugal this year to showcase emerging technologies and to explore the impact of technology on the world, marking the advent of the so called “third industrial revolution”.
The four day conference, held at the MEO Arena and Feira Interantional de Lisbon, featured a varied selection of topics - including WHAT? - connecting the decision makers of today with the entrepreneurs of tomorrow, thereby helping to establish a new pillar in the global startup ecosystem. Ripe with excitement and innovative ideas, it was clear from the very beginning that Web Summit 2017 would leave us with incredible food for thought.
On Day 3 of the conference, as we were making our way through the Speakers Lounge filled with thought leaders on innovation within the Music industry, an unusual sight caught our eye. Between the predominately male-represented tech companies and startups, we noticed a young blonde woman, reminiscent of the great Brigitte Bardot, seemingly typing away on her laptop while humming a song. Disrupted by her presence, we decided to dig deeper and ask her point of view on Europe’s biggest innovation-focused event.
Looking around, one could really feel that something big is happening and the excitement of being part of it is contagious.
Between tech giants and startups, on the third day of event, concentrated on innovation in Music, we meet at the Speakers Lounge a beautiful blonde girl busy to type fast on her laptop while humming a song.
She doesn’t really seem to belong to a mostly masculine and geeky tech world, but maybe it’s only a stereotype. We decide to dig deeper and ask her point of view on the biggest European innovation conference.
What brings you here?

I suppose it is the digital economy that curated my calling. Today my mission is to introduce the world to Pop Tech 2.0 and there’s no better venue to connect with like-minded individuals than Web summit. So far it’s been incredible.”

Having presented our question, we found out that we were speaking with Ginta Biku, a Universal Music Group signed singer and technology enthusiast, on the brink of publishing her second album. Fluent in 6 languages, the multi-faceted musician spoke of her vision to enable people to engage with musicians and their art in a way never experienced before, by engaging virtual and augmented reality-focused technologies.

“My new album will represent the bridge between two worlds that beautifully coexist - anagogic and digital, heritage and innovation. I decided to come to Lisbon because I want to fill the gap between the fantastic new high-end technologies available and the wider public. My goal is to bring these new inventions closer to people, to create a new level in the consumption of entertainment. The first step - shooting a virtual reality music video in collaboration with the director who brought you Lady Gaga’s Poker Face for one of the songs on my new album. Once you give in your urge to try, it’s like going from a silent black and white television set to the latest 4K model.“

Ginta, or “Brigitte Bardot 2.0” as we nicknamed her within our team, seems to be establishing herself as a disruptive magnet between the world of technology and entertainment. We will certainly be keeping an eye out on her next steps.
