Shortage of car licence plates in Serbia

Serbian drivers have been facing a shortage of licence plates over the past two weeks and have had to leave their cars parked in expectation of new plates or risk fines.

The Internal Affairs Ministry told N1 that the licence plates are stamped by the Serbian National Bank’s (NBS) Institute for Banknotes and Coins which claims to be delivering exactly the amount of licence plates that the police request.

The police said that certain quantities of licence plates are being >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << delivered and added that car owners are being called in to pick them up.

Drivers can register their cars without getting new licence plates but they have to leave them parked or risk getting a fine ranging from 20,000 (about 160 Euros) to 40,000 Dinars (about 320 Euros).

Jelena Vukurovic from Novi Sad told N1 that she needs her car for her tourist guide job. “I can’t drive, I’m loosing money because I have been refusing tours for nine days while I wait for new licence plates,” she said, adding that the police offered to issue temporary plates which cost 7,000 Dinars (about 60 Euros).

An increasing number of car owners are having to replace their licence plates which have the Serbian letters č, ć, š, ž, đ and the letters w and y with new plates. Vukurovic said she is replacing her licence plates for that very reason but wondered why the authorities are charging her for a system mistake when they knew that the Serbian letters are not acceptable in the European Union.
