Serbia’s opposition must change, a leader says

The change of the entire system and the departure of the current regime are only possible if a unity between the national and civil democratic forces is achieved, Dragan Djilas one of Serbia’s opposition leaders, says.

In an article for the Belgrade NIN weekly, Djilas wrote that everyone who wanted Serbia as a democratic society arranged by rules and regulations, had to be together at this time.

“The pro-Vucic’s country is destroying the rule of law in the state, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << crushing on human rights and media freedom and wrecking both the national and civil part of Serbia equally,” Djilas wrote.

He referred to the leadership of Serbia’s President and the leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Aleksandar Vucic.

Djilas added that a consent should be reached not only among the opposition parties but also among the population.

His article followed several attempts by the fractured opposition to come together after a disastrous result at the Belgrade vote earlier this year when the SNS, with Vucic’s name on top of the coalition list, took the capital in a landslide victory over split opponents.

The last meeting produced no result since the representatives of the Free Citizen’s Movement, led by Sasa Jankovic, the man who came second in the latest presidential elections, but still far away from Vucic, objected the participation of the ultra-nationalist Dveri movement in a potential opposition coalition.

Djilas, who was the Mayor of Belgrade from 2008 to 2013, run in the city’s election as an independent candidate but supported by several opposition parties and movements. His block ended second in all city’s municipalities but in two central ones where they won over the SNS coalition.
