Serbia’s local opposition leaders to brief CoE on pressures
The Mayor of Serbia’s western town of Sabac, the only opposition-held town in the country, told reporters on Thursday he and two of his colleagues would brief the Council of Europe in November on pressures they said came from the central government, the Beta news agency reported.
Nebojsa Zelenovic and two other opposition leaders, the heads of the municipalities of Cajetina and Paracin, Milan Stamatovic and Sasa Paunovic respectively, would speak about how the electoral will changed >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << in local administrations during the elections and after them.
“The aldermen are under pressure on a daily basis, and we have formed a commission which is collecting all kinds of that pressure, threats and blackmails to change a party or vote differently,” Zelenovic said, adding that the local administrations could not apply for any money from the ministries or from the state budget.
He and the other two opposition leaders would speak before the CoE Committee for monitoring the Congress of local and regional administrations on November 6, after, as they said, unsuccessfully trying to solve the issue with the Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.
Paunovic said he wrote to the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Governance last week and expected that it “will understand the problems local administrations are facing and that it will be possible to discuss the issue openly in the country instead of seeking attention abroad.”
The three opposition leaders were invited to address the CoE for the second time, after the last Committee meeting in Istanbul in June which both Zelenovic and Paunovic took part in.
