Serbia’s local authorities seek help from Council of Europe

Three local leaders in Serbia said on Thursday they sought help from the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities because, as they said, of “the pressure from the (ruling Serbian Progressive Party) SNS,” Belgrade Danas daily reported.

The mayor of Sabac, in Western Serbia, the municipality's head of Cajetina in the same region and his colleague from a central town of Paracin, all three members of the opposition parties in Serbia, said the pressures >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << aimed at their deputies leaving their parties or the local ruling coalition or join the SNS.

The Paracin authorities sent a letter to the Council of Europe describing the forms of alleged pressure exercised by the SNS.

The message said that the members of the opposition were destructed during the sessions by the SNS trustees’ intrusions and blackmailed within public institutions or in companies.

The issue will be on the agenda of the Council of Europe’s Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities' session scheduled for June 28 in Istanbul where the local Paracin leader Sasa Paunovic will address the gathering.

Pending the discussion, Committee may send its people to a fact-finding mission in Serbia.
