Serbia’s Vucic upset with church's interference in politics

The President of Serbia said on Thursday he was bothered with “bad interference” of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) into politics, reacting to its message telling the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in Kosovo should not be questioned at any cost, the Beta news agency reported.

Speaking in Helsinki where he takes part at the European Peoples’ Parties’ (EPP) Congress, Aleksandar Vucic has said the territory and people guarded sovereignty and asked >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << whether Serbia has had any of that in Kosovo?

The SPC statement following the Synod’s two-day meeting said Kosovo “has never been nor it can be only a political issue for which the state institutions have a monopoly to solve.”

It added the recognition of Kosovo’s independence, its membership to the UN or Serbia’s waiver of its rights over Kosovo under any form would annul all Serbia’s historical rights to “this cradle of our spirituality and statehood.”

“What have we been left with since 1999 and 2009? Where are our army and people, which territory we control? How to preserve it,” Vucic asked, adding people mattered to him the most.

He explained that the full sovereignty meant the presence of Serbia’s army and police.

"That is what it means. I’m afraid it (the SPC statement) is irresponsible. I’m not going to gamble, but will surely safeguard our people. However, with your rejection of any compromise, I’m afraid we won’t have anything to make a compromise about,” Vucic told the Pink television from the Finish capital.

He added that “the irresponsible politics brought us where we are now.”

The SPC comment came ahead of Vucic’s meeting with Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci in Brussels later on Thursday.

The European Unity which facilitates the dialogue has suddenly summoned the two, only days before they will attend the Remembrance Day ceremony in Paris invited by the French President Emmanuel Macron. The speculations were the two Balkan leaders would use the opportunity to continue talks on normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina that have been on hold since July.

Both Vucic and Thaci have said they expect talks to be tough but added the dialogue has to continue.
