Serbians trust corrupt, political police
Trust in the police is growing among the population of Serbia along with a conviction that the police is corrupt and political, the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy said in a report released on Tuesday.
According to the report, the polled Serbians believe that the traffic police is the most corrupt. The polled also believe that they are safe not because they rely on the police or military but because they rely on themselves.
“Only one in four citizens of Serbia >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << believe they can rely on the police to protect them. The population still do not see any tangible results of the fight against corruption in the police but are slightly optimistic about the future,” Belgrade Centre for Security Policy spokesman Sasa Djordjevic told a presentation of the report.
The report said that the public feels that the police is very corrupt and political but that does not affect their trust in the police which leads to the conclusion that people are used to corruption being present everywhere.
One in four people believe that the police protects the interests of the government and political parties while 60 percent believe the police is a service for the population.
The poll showed that there is a general belief of deep-rooted corruption in Serbia with the health care system, police, judiciary and the media at the top of the list of institutions seen as corrupt.
