Serbian top general waiting for president’s decision
Serbia’s chief of staff General Ljubisa Dikovic has met all the conditions to retire under the law but is waiting for a decision from the Serbian President.
“I am absolutely ready to retire. I can leave right now. It’s a simple thing and if I do stay on active service it will be under the law,” Dikovic told N1.
Under the law, officers and non-coms retire at the age of 58 and with 40 years of active service in the Serbian armed forces and only a decision by the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << government or president can keep him in the post. Dikovic turned 58 on May 22 and has 45 years of active service. He has served as chief of staff under two presidents and several defence ministers including Aleksandar Vucic, the current Serbian President who has been saying that he is satisfied with the general.
Military analyst Aleksandar Radic told N1 that the head of state is the only official who can decide whether the general will retire or not. “That is within the powers of President Vucic, his decision is what we are waiting for,” he said. Radic added that Dikovic’s possible successors are land forces commander Milosav Simovic and Assistant Defence Minister Milan Mojsilovic. “Both have had good careers. Both commanded units in war. General Mojsilovic spent three years as head of Serbia’s military mission to NATO in Brussels while General Simovic has more experience in the field in Serbia,” he said.
The decision on a new chief of staff is also within the jurisdiction of the president.
