Those organizations warned of the selective use of legal mechanisms and abuse of powers by the Serbian Tax Authority, specifically in the case of the Juzne Vesti news portal in the city of Nis, and the use of administrative harassment to exert pressure on media. The letter recalled that tax inspectors ordered the portal to pay almost 1 million Dinars in fines under regulations which are not applicable to privately owned media.
It added that hate speech and unacceptable behavious towards journalists by officials and state employees is ongoing with 18 cases reported this year alone.
The letter called for a condemnation of the “systematic throttling of critical media in Serbia”.
