Serbian farmers unhappy over sunflower prices

Serbian farmers expressed dissatisfaction with the purchase price of sunflower, the Beta news agency reported on Tuesday.

The Independent Association of Farmers of Serbia said that it was not happy with the price of 28.5 Dinars a kilogram of sunflower offered by cooking oil producers. “We feel that the price is below real market value and is the result of cartel behaviour and newly-established monopolies in processing and exporting sunflower. The biggest oil plant in Serbia is >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << pressuring other oil producers to offer the same low price,” a press release said.

The farmers’ association said a realistic price would not be lower than 35 Dinars a kilogram. “The price of 28.5 Dinars does not cover production costs and will cause farmers to give up on this crop which is important to Serbia,” the press release added and called the government to find an urgent solution.
