Serbian Minister: unions invited to discuss pay grades
Serbian Education Minister Mladen Sarcevic said on Monday that every union will be invited to take part in drafting a law on the wages system in the public sector but added that he hasn’t been in contact with teachers’ unions whose representatives are all on vacation.
“They’re on vacation and I haven’t had a single day off. I have sent them messages inviting them to talks once they get back,” the minister said.
Sarcevic rejected claims by teachers’ unions >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << that others in the public sector were better off than they are, adding that he told the unions to draw up a list of examples of how teachers had been wronged by the draft law which is due to take effect on January 1, 2019.
“The unions should say whether a geography teacher should have the same pay grade as a doctor who spent six years studying,” the minister said. No one’s salary will be lowered by the draft law, wages can only be raised, Sarcevic said.
Spokespersons for two major teachers’ unions told the Beta news agency that they are not happy with the pay grades because teachers are in a pay grade below others.
