Serbian Fiscal Council says no room to raise pensions

The Serbian Fiscal Council released a statement saying that there is no room to raise pensions in 2019 and denying media reports that misinterpreted its stand on raising pensions.

Some media misinterpreted the stand of the Fiscal Council on the possibility of raising pensions in 2019 by some seven percent in line with predictions by the government and International Monetary Fund (IMF), it said.

The statement added that the government was right to abolish the law which >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << temporarily reduced pensions but added that the difference in what the Fiscal Council and the government suggested is in the way the available funds will be used.

“The Fiscal Council feels that the remaining fiscal space should be used to return to regular indexing for all pensions in 2019, that is to an orderly pension system,” it said, adding that the government has decided to use the available funds for a non-system rise in pensions for only those pensioners who have less than 34,000 Dinars a month.

The government’s decision uses up all available funds and the Fiscal Council feels that this leaves no room to increase pensions next year, the statement said.
