Serbian Farmers want cheaper fuel for harvest
Farmers in Vojvodina have been angered by government announcements of cheaper fuel in September and are demanding an immediate lifting of excise taxes on fuel to save the harvest.
Farmers have contacted the authorities in both Belgrade and Novi Sad to ask for help but have been told that they can’t get fuel at lower prices before September.
According to Farmer Dragan Kleut he should start harvesting wheat in the next few days. “We are already in mid-harvest and weather >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << permitting we should harvest the wheat in the next two to three days. September is very late for us because we now need up to 300 litres of fuel. If we have to harvest at these expensive fuel prices it will be unbearable,” he said.
Farmers say that the government does not understand the fact that the entire year will go down the drain. A spokesman for the Banatski Paori farmers association said farmers want the agriculture minister to say what the plan is. “We want the minister or the prime minister to appear on the media and say what their plan is,” Borislav Cizmas said.
The farmers said they don’t want anything from the government but they do not want to pay what they can’t afford. The excise tax on a litre of fuel is 56 (almost .50 Euro) Dinars and the price of diesel is around 165 Dinars (1.3 Euro).
