Serbia will consider ban on plastic bags, Minister says

A ban on plastic bags could be considered if it becomes necessary, Serbia’s Environmental Protection Minister Goran Trivan said on Friday.

“Once we assess that this [a ban on the use of plastic bags] is necessary and possible, we will do it,” Trivan said and added that the Ministry will wait to see the effects of the newly introduced charges for plastic bags.

The first day that the charge was introduced resulted in a 50 percent drop in the use of plastic bags. “I >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << would like to completely stop using plastic bags,” Trivan said and called all retail chains in Serbia to start charging for non-biodegradable bags.

Belgrade daily newspaper Politika reported that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is preparing a ban on plastic bags.
