Poverty rises in Serbia; elders endangered, report says

European Network against Poverty – Serbia, called on the authorities to urgently protect the people facing hardship, particularly the senior citizens, the Beta news agency reported on Tuesday.

The network’s report “Caution, poverty! 2018: Poverty and Social Exclusion of Elders” warns that Serbia’s population is among the oldest in the world with an average age of 43, while in 2016 every fifth citizen had at least 65 years of age.

The network demands from the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Government to urgently adopt a new strategy on ageing with measures for better protection from poverty and social exclusion of older people.

The European Network Against Poverty – Serbia gathers 20 members and in 2011 became a member of European Anti-poverty Network (EAPN) joining 28 states across Europe.

The report published ahead of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty observed on October 17 says that almost a half of people in Serbia at the age of 75 cannot satisfy material needs, a much higher percentage than in the European Union.

Also, over 25 percent of Serbia’s population older than 65 cannot buy themselves two pairs of shoes per season, while one third of them cannot replace the worn out clothing.

Some 25 percent cannot afford to socialise with friends once a month, while less than 50 percent can see their friends once a week.

The poverty in Serbia threatens 48 percent of the unemployed.
