Partnerships for private profit in Serbia, activist warns

Public-private partnerships are oriented towards private profit more than towards the interests of the population, a representative of the Don’t Drown Belgrade (Ne Davimo Beograd) initiative said at a meeting about several projects initiated by the Serbian authorities on Thursday.

Initiative spokeswoman Ksenija Radovanovic said that the public-private partnership to build a waste incinerator at the Vinca landfill outside Belgrade will have devastating effects and will affect household >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << budgets and the health of the population. She said almost 12,000 people working at recycling in Belgrade will be left without a livelihood.

“It turns out that the city of Belgrade will set aside at least 38 million Euro over the next 30 years to burn communal waste and that 70 percent of the amount will be collected through new waste treatment taxes and through our bills. On the other side, the city has obliged itself to build the infrastructure needed to move the local population,” Radovanovic said.

She warned that a number of things have been introduced “under the radar” and cited the example of billboards and public toilets. “The first public toilet in the area around parliament was set up by the Alma Kvatro company and the authorities gave a concession on billboards to a private partners with no public consultations. It seems that everything that can’t be sold is given to anyone who can get money out of public services,” Radovanovic said.
