Over 10,000 doctors left Serbia in the past 20 ears
Estimates are that around 10,000 doctors left Serbia to find work abroad, in the past 20 years.
According to Politika daily, some 800 doctors, annually, ask the Medical Chamber of Serbia to issue them a certificate of good practice. This document is necessary for employment in certain countries.
The daily states that some countries do not require such certificates at all, and it is assumed that around 400 doctors use certificates to work in neighbouring countries during >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << weekends, while around 200 of them go abroad for training.
"In February, the German Medical Chamber confirmed that there are some 460 of Serbian doctors in this country," Politika said
Earlier, it was more difficult to verify a diploma in Germany, but now it is easy because they have a doctor's deficit and have dropped the criteria, the daily added.
Director of the Medical Chamber of Serbia, Milan Dinic, said that an even greater problem than emigration of medical staff is that "medical practitioners generally want to work in big cities" and that they do not want to return to health institutions in smaller towns after studying.
According to him, due to better salaries and working conditions, doctors from Serbia move to much richer countries, while Serbia has a positive migration of medical practitioners from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
Georgios Konstantinidis, President of the Board of Directors of Serbia’s Chamber of Health Institutions, said that doctors’ salaries in developed countries are three to seven times higher than in Serbia and that professors specialists can earn between EUR 4,000 and EUR 5,000 a month.
