No declaration of origin for fresh meat in Serbia
Serbian retailers have a legal obligation to declare the origin of packaged meat but do not have the same obligation when it comes to fresh meat, a national Veterinary Administration official told N1 on Thursday.
Tamara Boskovic said that retailers have to know where the meat they are selling comes from but are not obliged to inform buyers unless the meat is pre-packed or imported.
Under the new regulations which took effect on June 15, retailers are obliged to declare >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the origin of pre-packed products and must know the origin of the fresh meat they sell, she said.
Pre-packaged meat products from the European Union go through strict controls in their country of origin and added control in Serbia and consumers should have no doubts about the quality of that imported meat, Boskovic said.
The Veterinary Administration recently seized and destroyed 23 tonnes of bad quality beef imported from Brazil.
