More refugees entering Serbia from Bulgaria

The number of refugees entering Serbia from Bulgaria has been rising since May, the Serbian Refugee Commissariat said on Tuesday.

According to Commissariat data, Serbia is currently host to 2,891 refugees including 324 in four refugee centres closest to the borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia. The number of refugees in those four centres has dropped by 38 since mid-May, but the number of refugees who have entered Serbia from Bulgaria has almost doubled in the same period.

Most of the refugees are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran with just 1.8 percent of them coming from Syria, the Commissariat said.

Internal Affairs Ministry data shows that 8,602 people had passed through the 18 refugee centres in Serbia up to June 1 with 3,185 of them saying that they would apply for asylum but only 78 applying for asylum.
