Kosovo is not Catalonia, Thaci says
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said on Friday that he understands why Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy did not come to Sofia for the European Union-Western Balkans Summit but added that Kosovo is no Catalonia.
Rajoy informed the summit host, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov on March 23 that he would not be attending the gathering because he does not want to sit at the same table as representatives of Kosovo, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << choosing instead to send the Spanish Ambassador to the EU Pablo Garcia-Berdoy to the event.
Spain is one of five EU countries which do not recognize Kosovo as independent. “Under no condition can a parallel be drawn between ourselves and Spain because Kosovo is not Catalonia,” Thaci told the Euractiv portal.
We understand that Spain is sensitive on this issue and we will continue to be friendly towards it but sooner or later we will all be members of a big family, the EU, Thaci said, adding that he respects Spain’s democratic tradition and territorial integrity.
