French President to visit Serbia, date to be determined

French President Emanuel Macron has “in principle” confirmed he would visit Belgrade, and the date has to be set, the country’s ambassador to Serbia told the European Western Balkans website.

Frederic Mondoloni told the Belgrade-based website that “it was now up to us to find the date, adding that the celebration of the centennial of the end of the First World War could be a good opportunity.”

“We hope that will be the time of the formal inauguration of the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Memorial of gratitude to France renovated by joint France’s and Serbia’s funds,” Mondoloni said.

The Memorial in Belgrade’s central Kalemegdan Park was formally unveiled on 11 November 1930, on the 12th anniversary day of the end of the First World War.

A month ago, Macron has invited Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic to Paris for the November 11 celebration.

Mondoloni said that Macron’s visit would be an opportunity for the two countries to enhance political and economic relations, especially regarding Serbia’s accession to the European Union and the work on Kosovo’s issue.

“France has been advocating the implementation of the Brussels Agreement since 2003, and in that sense, we continue to call upon Belgrade and Pristina to fulfil what they committed themselves to and to refrain from behaviours which could jeopardise a solution,” Mondoloni said.

He added that a mutually acceptable solution was difficult to find since all the consequences of that choice to the region had to be taken into account.

“The negotiations should include the appropriate precautions that would guarantee that any agreement on Kosovo won’t create problems elsewhere,” Mondoloni said.

He added that Macron would like his idea about the EU’s internal reforms to become a reality during his mandate which expires in 2022.

“That means that if Serbia manages to conduct the necessary reforms in that period, the 2025 deadline is still there,” Mondoloni said.
