Every third young woman in Serbia sexually harassed
A third of young women in Serbia suffered some sexual harassment ranging from unwanted closeness and touching to more explicit forms, the Beta news agency carried the Autonomous Women Centre, a non-governmental organisation, statement on Tuesday.
The Centre conducted a survey in June this year, and the question was “have you ever experienced any sexual harassment.”

“The girls are more frequently subjected to certain kinds of sexual harassment than men, and they are more likely to recognise such behaviour. The survey also showed that the young people could not name the conduct as sexual harassment,” Sanja Pavlovic, of the Centre said.
The most frequent sexual harassment in Serbia is giving people an inappropriate nickname, and eight out of ten girls were called “a doll,” “a pussycat” and alike, while only one out of ten men have experienced it.
“Every six out of ten young women receive sexually harassing texts and phone calls, while every third man has the same problem.
Pavlovic said that Serbia started to treat such behaviours as a crime of sexual disturbance last year, punishable by a fine or six months imprisonment.
“It is important to know that girls and young women react differently to these kinds of sexual violence, but that every behaviour with sexual connotation which humiliates or scares us is a crime,” Pavlovic said.
