Ethnic Hungarian parties clash over elections in Serbia

An ethnic Hungarian party has complained to the OSCE mission in Serbia of “obstruction and inappropriate acts” in the elections for the that national minority’s top representative body.

The Democratic Community of Vojvodina Hungarians (DZVM) sent an open letter to the OSCE mission accusing the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) of irregularities in the elections process for the Hungarian National Council.

‘We met with a number of politically motivated obstructions >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << by the SVM which is in power at all levels,” the letter signed by DZVM leader Aron Csonka said. It said that party activists were prevented from collecting and registering signatures.

“People are scared to support us with their signatures, fearing possible repercussions from the SVM which is exerting unprecedented pressure on ethnic Hungarians with threats of problems at work and refusal of funds from the Prosperitati foundation which is closely linked to the SVM,” Csonka said in the letter.

The SVM is the majority party in the Hungarian National Council.
