Dinars more profitable than Euros, Serbian central bank says
Savings in the Serbian national currency are more profitable than foreign currency savings, according to the country’s central bank, the Beta news agency reported on Monday.
The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) issued a statement saying that savings in Dinars brought a higher yield than foreign currency savings. The NBS said that 100,000 Dinars placed in a savings account in August 2012 would get about 270 Euros more in interest than from a savings account in Euros to the same value >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << over the same period.
The higher yield is due to low inflation and a relatively stable exchange rate, higher interest rates on Dinar savings and the fact that taxes are not paid on interest on Dinar savings unlike savings in foreign currency.
It added that savings in the national currency had tripled over the past six months from18 billion to 54.4 billion Dinars and was continuing to grow. According to the NBS, banks were also reporting a rise in foreign currency savings from 7.9 billion Euro to 9.7 billion Euro in the same period.
The population’s trust in the national currency has risen thanks to NBS measures and the stability of inflation, the exchange rate and the financial system, the statement added. “One thing that is especially encouraging is the fact that savings in both Dinars and foreign currency have increased despite the lowering of interest rates on timed deposits,” it added.
“The Dinar exchange rate against the Euro is at almost the same level that it was in August 2012 and the net foreign currency reserves are at their highest level since the year 2000,” the NBS said.
