Danube expected to rise Serbian ministry says
Serbia’s Traffic Ministry said on Monday that the waters of the Danube would start to rise in the next few days, allowing ships to continue using the waterway following very low water levels over the summer months.
“The good news is that the Serbian meteorological office (RHMZ) has annouced that the waters of the Danube will rise by 2.5 metres,” a ministry press release said, recalling that there hass been no serious rainfall in the countries upstream of Serbia since July >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << 1.
The press release said that shipping had not been stopped in Serbia but that no ship was loaded to full capacity because of the low water levels. Hungary banned shipping in several parts of the Danube because of the low water levels.
The ministry said it would make sure shipping continued unabated on the Danube even if water levels drop further. We are far from the historic minimum in 1909 when water levels dropped by 146 centimetres at Bezdan compared to the current drop of 98 centimetres, it added.
