Daily: Patients in Serbia wait up to six years for operation

The statistics about the situation in Serbia’s health service show that 72,540 patients are on waiting lists for different types of screening, while for the most necessary interventions and operations they wait from two to six years, the Belgrade daily Politika wrote on Tuesday.

The most extended waiting lists are for the cataract operation, hip and knee implants, heart coronary angiogram, valves’ implants, but also for head and spinal MRI.

A patient from a hospital >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << in western Serbia who has been on a waiting list for a knee implant since 2013 will see his surgeon in 2019, while a patient in a Belgrade hospital will be operated on in 2022 since he was put on a waiting list last month.

The longest waiting lists are for heart and orthopaedic operations in all hospitals and medical centres across Serbia, Politika daily wrote.

The reasons for such worrying situation in Serbia’s health services include a lack of sophisticated medical equipment, or its concentration in Belgrade and a couple of more cities, a lack of drugs and reagents and, especially in last several years, a massive medical staff departure abroad due to low pay and deteriorating work conditions.
