Bloomberg: Serbian president caught in tug-of-war
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is at the center of a tug-of-war between east and west and key to how the immediate future plays out in the Western Balkans, the Bloomberg agency said on Friday adding that he is determined to go down in history as the man who reconciled ethnic and territorial differences in a region synonymous with war.
“Some people don’t like me because of my past, some people hate me because of some irrational reasons, some people hate me because of rational >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << reasons,” Vucic said in an interview to the agency. He said the “resolution of the problem between Serbs and Albanians is something that will change this region entirely. Our region will be a machine of growth for the entire European Union, and it doesn’t matter if it is going to be a part of the EU or at the entrance,” the Serbian president said.
Bloomberg recalled that the Belgrade-Pristina talks have stalled, adding that Vucic said he expects to meet Kosovo President Hashim Thaci in Brussels again this year.
Vucic declined to reveal any details of a possible deal between Belgrade and Pristina but said it would be a tough compromise. “I will do my best to get closer to a solution, because that’s something that will save Serbia in the future, save many lives,” he said.
He said that membership in the EU is the only way forward for Serbia despite scepticism among its citizens and that means listening to what German Chancellor Angela Merkel has to say. “I even said that to Russia today,” he said.
Talking to Merkel “was not an easy conversation,” he said, adding: “but I’ll never say anything against her.”
Vucic said that US President Donald Trump’s “is more open to listening to our side as well”. “Now we can discuss something with Americans. That’s the change. They have opened doors, and that’s good,” he said.
