Bieber: New UN resolution after Belgrade-Pristina agreement
Austrian university professor Florian Bieber said on Friday that any agreement reached by Belgrade and Pristina must include a new UN Security Council resolution which would all Kosovo to become a UN member.
"Technically, an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo would have to lead to a new UN Security Council resolution which would replace or abolish resolution 1244 and allow Kosovo to become a member of the UN,” >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << he said.
Bieber, a professor of history and politics at the University of Graz, told the Beta news agency that the agreement would ultimately have to deal with international recognition for Kosovo. “Securing UN membership is important for Kosovo as well as having no opposition to recognition from any European Union member state. That has to be secured in an agreement. The key issue is for Kosovo and Serbia to reach that agreement,” he said.
He added that Russia’s opposition to an agreement which does not fall within the framework of UN Security Council resolution 1244 is understandable because it would reduce Moscow’s influence on Serbia. “Russia could spend the next 10 years claiming that it was defending Serbia and its view on recognition of Kosovo in the UN Security Council but Serbia’s accepting of the reality of an independent Kosovo would reduce Russia’s ability to affect events in the Western Balkans,” he said.
