Arrests during Skopje protest against name deal with Greece
Protest in Macedonian capital against Athens - Skopje deal on a new country name turned violent late on Sunday with seven police officers injured and 25 demonstrators arrested, the MIA news agency reported quoted police and medical sources.
The protests both in Macedonia and Greece erupted after the news broke out that the countries’ foreign ministers signed an accord renaming Macedonia into the Republic of North Macedonia.
Also on Sunday, Greek nationalists demonstrated >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << over the deal agreed by the two countries prime ministers, Zoran Zaev of Macedonia and Alexis Tsipras of Greece, which many see as a historic compromise between the respective governments.
Those nationalists opposing the change on both sides staged protests immediately after the news on the deal broke out and continued after Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Dimitrov signed an accord on Sunday.
Media reported that at least three protesters were injured while there was no any official information on the number of casualties.
Emergency services were on the scene helping the wounded.
The initial protest organised via social networks, turned violent when a group of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building started throwing rocks and torches in an attempt to break through the police lines.
Special police unit, called in to help, used shock bombs and tear gas to disperse the protesters.
