Anti-corruption agency: Some 30,000 officials in Serbia

Serbia’s Anti-corruption Agency has registered 29,936 officials at all levels, the Beta news agency reported, or over one percent of employed people in the country.

The Agency published the data in answer to the Vojvodina Investigative and Analytical Centre (VOICE) question prompted by news that the number of public officials in the country rose from 12,000 in 2011 to almost 34,000 in 2017.

Serbia had just over seven million people according to the data from 2016, but >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the number later dropped below that figure.

Last year the number of employed was 2,881,000. The statistics register as employed even those who had a paid job for an hour in a week, as well as the farmers and members of their families.

However, the number of officials may not be accurate, since, according to a former head of the Agency’s Board Zoran Stojiljkovic, there are some essential officials who do not have executive powers and thus are not registered by the Agency.

“Those officials’ are often better paid and more influential, but are not registered as such,” Stojiljkovic told the VOICE.

The data also show that in 2013 there were 25,587 officials, while their number rose to 28,000 in 2015, the year when the government introduced a law banning new employment in state institutions and public sector.

Since 2012, Serbia is ruled by the coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), currently headed by the President Aleksandar Vucic.
