The Belgrade-based Beta news agency said that its correspondent in Nis had been contacted by several people who claimed to have had a mild form of the virus but added that there was no confirmation from the health care sector that the disease had appeared in southern Serbia.

According to data from the Serbian Public Health Institute, there have been a total of 286 registered cases of West Nile virus, including 29 deaths from the disease which is carried by mosquitoes. Up to 90 percent of the people infected with the virus show no symptoms and the rest show symptoms similar to the flu. Some, mainly older patients contract meningitis or encephalitis and need to be hospitalised for treatment.
