Anniversary of Slobodan Milosevic’s ouster

On October 5, 2000, a half of million people from all over Serbia flooded the streets of Belgrade in a protest of, what they said, was Slobodan Milosevic’s regime election theft, N1 reported.

Eighteen years on, many of Milosevic ’s coalition member parties and their officials are in power in today’s Serbia, while the then opposition is struggling to survive on the country’s political map.

Following the presidential election in 2000, the opposition said its candidate >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Vojislav Kostunica won the vote, while the official results called for the second round.

That angered many, and led by several opposition leaders, they staged a massive protest, setting former Yugoslav assembly building partly on fire, and damaging the national RTS television house.

The only casualty was a young woman who fell off a lorry.

Milosevic failed to use police and army which were said to have ignored an order to intervene, and he eventually conceded the defeat.

Milosevic was later arrested and sent to The Hague Tribunal to face war crime charges. He died at a Scheveningen's cell before the end of the trial.

The 18-strong DOS coalition of former opposition parties took power in December 2000, but in March 2003, the main leader Zoran Djindjic, who became the Prime Minister, was assassinated. Milosevic's former security and police members were indicted for the murder and some received the maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.

The DOS coalition fell apart, and its main parties finally lost all the power in the 2012 election, when Milosevic’s Information Minister Aleksandar Vucic, current Serbia’s President, became the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence.

He said on Friday that the October 5 had “some good and some bad sides.”

The anniversary was marked by the then losing side describing the event as "a big theft,” alluding at some privatisations that followed, while the winners from 2000 remembered the day as a missed chance to do more.
