30 killed by domestic violence, Serbian ministers say

Thirty people have been killed in domestic violence incidents this year, Serbian Justice Minister Nela Kuburovic said on Thursday.

Kuburovic and Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic told a news conference that the courts and police had reacted in thousands of cases, imposing measures under the law against perpetrators.

Speaking after a meeting of the Council to suppress domestic violence, Kuburovic said 23 women and seven men had died in domestic violence incidents. >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << She added that charges had been filed in 44,278 instances of domestic violence.

“The number of reported cases is big, perhaps even worryingly big, but that shows that the victims have been encouraged to report violence,” she said.

The Justice Minister said that the relevant institutions are ready to prevent an escalation of domestic violence but warned that society as a whole has to react to violence.

Stefanovic told reporters that the joint training for the police, judges and prosecutors which is already underway has to be stepped up. “We have noticed some shortcomings and we need more trained police and prosecutors,” the minister added.

“We are not completely satisfied but significant progress has been achieved and our goal is to lower the number of people considering violence,” he said.
