Its not clear what have caused the virus or how it occurred, but one thing is certain - it came from Serbia .

Joel in one of the episodes finds two images that are symptoms of "ancient infection from Serbia." One picture shows a person being bit by other person on the hand. And the second picture shows someone vomiting.

And then, granny with a symbolic name Novak, translates that images.

- People are eating people to survive - says one.

- Without medicine, people die - the translation of the other one.

She said that those pictures represent the story of "small place in Serbia named Pozega" she was told about when she was little. As she said, everybody became monsters in that village, and the purpose of the story was to scare small children.

Pictures are from a rare book which says where is the cure and how to get to it. So because of the ancient virus from Serbia, Drew Barrymore in the series opens the fridge and eats raw meat of the former colleague. However he did not like and she wanted only fresh meat.
