Moscow: Kosovo solution must be in Serbia’s people interest

Russia’s position starts from the international law and from the fact that a solution should suit the people of Serbia, Maria Zaharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson has said on Thursday, the Beta news agency reported.

Her statement came as the last in a series of comments about Kosovo’s and Russia’s presidents Hashim Thaci and Vladimir Putin brief encounter at the sidelines of the Remembrance Day commemoration in Paris last Sunday.

Thaci tweeted >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << pictures of himself with Putin and said later the meeting was a huge step forward in Kosovo’s diplomatic efforts.

“This is the first meeting at this level between Kosovo and Russia whose stand and position is very important if an agreement is reached – that it will withdraw its veto in the UN Security Council and allow Kosovo to become a UN member. That is a step forward which was lacking in relations with Russia,” Thaci told Pristina’s Klan Kosova TV, adding that they spoke alone for a few minutes about the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and possible peace agreement.

Pristina was not delighted with the meeting and on Thursday morning, “Northern Kosovo is not Crimea,” graffiti was sprayed in the vicinity of the student centre and the Faculty of Natural Sciences, next to the photos of Thaci and Putin.

Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj said Kosovo was a part of the US and European Union sphere of interest which was conflicted with the Russian interest.

He added he did not know what the goal of the meeting was.

Moscow did not deny the meeting took place, but Zaharova reiterated her country’s stand regarding the side Russia would take.
