Kosovo president hopes for agreement next spring
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci expressed hope on Friday that Pristina and Belgrade will reach a peace agreement by next spring.
“I hope that before next spring we will have a peace agreement which will include mutual recognition,” Thaci said in an interview to Franch 24. “We are very close to a solution but still very far because there is a gap between us,” he said and added that he hopes to meet Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic in the coming weeks.

“The only alternative is a peaceful agreement between Serbia and Kosovo and not the current status quo which I think is regression,” he said.
Asked about possible exchanges of territories and border corrections, the president said that his idea about changes to the border between Serbia and Kosovo implies a successful agreement and UN membership for Kosovo. “That would prevent the risk of partition and the forming of Serb-majority areas, he said.
“This would not be the death of a multi-ethnic Kosovo. In no case will we go against multi-ethnicity,” he said.
“I am aware of the fact that the implementation of the agreement will be difficult, that there are obstacles, but I hope and believe that a just solution will lead to a definitive end to the conflict between Serbs and Albanians,” Thaci said.
“Without an agreement both countries’ future would be blocked,” he warned.
He said that Kosovo is a positive precedent and added that mutual recognition by Belgrade and Pristina would have no bad effects on the region. “Why should Kosovo-Serbia be a negative precedent? It’s the most complicated problem in Europe and we have to solve our problems alone in the Western Balkans,” he said.
“If both sides agree on a change of borders, no one would be against it. There would be no destabilization,” the Kosovo president said.
