Kosovo opposition: Thaci denies his country's borders

Kosovo’s parliament called an extraordinary session upon the request of 44 out of 120 deputies to discuss President Hashim Thaci’s suggestion on border correction with Belgrade as a part of a comprehensive settlement and a legally binding agreement on normalisation of relations, N1 reported.

The opposition says it wants “a red line” in the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue, not to bloc it.

The talks have >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << been on hold since July when Thaci and his Serbia’s counterpart Aleksandar Vucic had the last tête-à-tête meeting in Brussels.

They were there again in September but only to separately meet with the European Union Foreign Affairs and Security Policy chief Federica Mogherini who mediates the negotiations.

Thaci’s parliamentary opponents request a resolution to say that “the territory of the Republic of Kosovo is definite and inseparable, so no one, not even a president, does not have the mandate to discuss it.”

Thaci has been advocating what he calls border correction, saying it means the annexation of Serbia’s southern region mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians, and denying it may include any division of Kosovo or territory swap with Belgrade.

Neither the opposition nor the Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj supports his idea.

The opposition describes it as unconstitutional and against the Kosovo statehood, while Haradinaj warns of new tragedies, referring to the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo in case of border changes.

Abdullah Hoti, the chief of the deputies' club of the Democratic Alliance for Kosovo, said Thaci's idea had no sense for at least three reasons.

Describing it as a conspiracy, he said that the exchange of territory was Belgrade’s and Moscow’s plan to prevent the consolidation of Kosovo. The territory swap, according to Hoti, does not guarantee a UN membership since China would have to change opinion. And, finally, the move does not secure a clear European perspective because Spain’s attitude towards Kosovo independence won't change with any territory swap.

Moscow is Belgrade’s traditional partner and supporter, and Serbia is strengthening its relations with China both economically and politically.

Spain, for its internal reasons, is among five EU member states which have not recognised Kosovo’s independence.

An opposition Self-Determination party deputy Glauk Konjufca told the parliament session that “the worst mistake by a leader is when he endangers his country by opposing its borders.”

“Serbia has always opposed Kosovo, and we are used to it, but this is the first time that Kosovo’s president denies its borders,” Konjufca said, adding Belgrade can benefit from the idea “by telling the international community that something is wrong with Kosovo.
