Kosovo finance minister refuses higher salary

Kosovo’s Finance Minister Bedri Hamza has refused a raise, the Beta news agency reported on Friday.

Hamza refused to accept his salary which included the raise to be paid retroactively from December last year as decided by the Kosovo government last week. Hamza was the only minister to vote against the rise in salaries for ministers and their deputies and political advisors.

Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << gave himself and his close associates raises in December 2017 but the opposition Vetvendosje (Self-determination) party went to the Constitutional Court to demand a ruling on the higher salaries. The court ruled that the decision was no unconstitutional and the salary raises which had been suspended until the ruling will now be paid.

Beta said that Haradinaj raised his salary from 1,500 Euro to 2,950 Euro, adding that now the five deputy prime ministers will have salaries of 2,500 Euro each, ministers will be paid 2,000 Euro, their deputies will get 1,150 Euro and the prime minister’s chief of staff will get 1,850 Euro and his deputy 1,400 Euro. Haradinaj’s cabinet chief will now be paid 1,670 Euro and his political advisors between 1,100 and 1,340 Euro each.

Under Kosovo law, once the prime minister’s salary is raised, the salaries of the presidents and judges of the Supreme and Appeals courts are raised as are the salaries of prosecutors at all levels.
