Kosovo&Serbia NGOs call on EU to react on partition reports
The representatives of 35 NGOs from Belgrade and Pristina called on the European Diplomacy chief to clearly declare herself against both the division of Kosovo and the swap of territories based on the ethnic principle, the Beta news agency reported.
In a letter to Federica Mogherini, the civil societies’ activists warned that such developments would undoubtedly cause a chain reaction in other Balkan countries and lead >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to numerous demands for the borders’ change in the region and push it into new wars.
“Those frequent hints of a possible change of borders send a very dangerous message to both the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia as well as to the whole region, that there is a real chance of legitimising this risky principle which could drive the region into bloody conflicts,” the letter said.
It added that the Serbs and Albanians living “on the wrong side” of the border would understand the message as a call to move to “their ethnic state” which could lead to another exodus of the Balkan peoples.
The NGOs called upon the international community and the Belgrade and Pristina authorities to negotiate the best possible conditions for the life of all Kosovo’s citizens and guarantee that the past crimes would not happen again.
“A state that is based on any discrimination and division among its citizens is destined to a catastrophe. A society that develops on the values opposite to the respect of basic human rights is condemned to nationalism, isolation and the lack of perspective,” the letter said.
It was signed by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, the Humanitarian Law Centre in Serbia, YUCOM, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights from Belgrade and Pristina, Sandzak Committee for Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms, Kosovo’s Women’s Network and Let's Do It Peja, and others.
