Belgrade official: Incident in Kosovo horrifies Serbia
Marko Djuric, the chief of Serbia’s Government Office for Kosovo said the whole country was appalled with an incident in Kosovo involving local Serbs, including a five-month-old baby, his Office’s statement said.
Two Serb children were injured in Wednesday’s incident in the Kosovo >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << village of Staro Gracko, the Kosovo state TV (RTK) reported.
It added the children were injured when the police intervened using pepper spray to break up a fight.
“The whole of Serbia is horrified by this savage act against the Serbs in the series of incidents in the last several days in which neither those expelled, nor the remaining natives, nor children, nor even babies are spared,” the statement quoted Djuric as saying.
He added that there was no doubt that such happenings were a direct consequence of the political climate which Pristina’s separatists were creating.
Djuric also criticised what he called a silence by the international community ’s representatives in Kosovo.
Serbia’s Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin joined Djuric in condemning the event, as did a Kosovo Serb political party.
“No dialogue or talks bear any significance, and they cannot be a wall for these orchestrated attacks,” a statemented form the Serb List said. It demanded from the intentional community to “finally wakes up and react to that synchronised violence.”
Kosovo Serb Deputy Prime Minister Dalibor Jevtic said the incident was “a dangerous provocation to which the arrest and punishment of those responsible is the only right reaction since the police know who the perpetrators are.”
A police officer used pepper spray to stop the fight between a local Serb and an Albanian that erupted in the village on Wednesday and sprayed the baby and her five-year-old brother.
They all received medical treatment.
Staro Gracko is a Serb enclave in the Lipljan municipality in the south of Kosovo and is known for the July 1999 murder of 14 farmers harvesting wheat.
