EU commissioner says Serbia needs economic growth

European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Günther Oettinger believes that Serbia should invest efforts to achieve economic growth if it wants to attract investors and be a partner on the single European market.

Speaking to the Serbian state TV (RTS), Oettinger said that economic growth would help speed up the country’s accession to the EU, making the year 2025 a realistic date for membership.

“Serbia also has to accept European values in regard >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to the rule of law and good neighbour policy,” he said and added that the challenges facing the country include “achieving European standards”. “This is complex in terms of competitiveness,” the commissioner said.

Oettinger said that the Western Balkans can expect up to a billion Euros a year from EU pre-accession funds to finance reforms and major projects, adding that this is about 25 percent more than in the previous period.
