Serbia’s mines to get strategic partner soon, PM says
Serbia’s mining and smelting RTB Bor Group, in the country’s impoverished eastern region, is likely to get a strategic partner this month, the Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has said.
She said that Serbia's government would call a tender for a company’s strategic partner in June and that she expected a “tough competition” for once Yugoslav giant copper and gold mines, N1 reported.
So far, some foreign companies >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << expressed interest in acquiring the majority of RTB Bor’s stakes, including Chinese and Russian firms.
The parent company (Head Office) is one of the four dependent entities within RTB Bor Group. The primary activity is managing the global business policy, capital, development, investments, as well as procurement and sale of the combined products.
Brnabic announced the tender in Bor ahead of the beginning of the geological research of the copper and gold reserves at the Cukaru Peki location, believed to be one of the richest in the world.
A new mine, Brnabic said, would mean “stronger Bor, Eastern Serbia and the mining industry in general."
She added that she expected the RTB Bor to increase its contribution to the country's GDP to 1.8 from 0.1 percent, saying that with a new strategic partner, all 5,000 workers will keep their jobs.
Serbia-based Rakita Exploration company and its Canadian partner Nevsun Resources have said that the building of the copper and goldfields will last through 20120.
Brnabic said that the investment worth 600 million dollars was crucially significant for the town of Bor and Eastern Serbia and that would create a 1,000 new jobs.
